Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America by James Allen, et al., published in 2000
This is one the most visually graphic publications to have ever come across the curators’ desks. This volume delivers a historical record of the atrocities of lynching through the medium of photography. The extreme graphic nature of this book makes it very difficult for most people to read or study: the photographic record of pain, suffering, sorrow, and cruelty leaps off the pages.
This book contains extremely sensitive material that must be handled with care by responsible institutions and scholars so that the material is not misrepresented, disregarded, or used insensitively. Visual evidence of bodily and emotional trauma must be archived responsibly so that appropriate scholarship is continued.
The Phillips Library chooses to provide a witness to these past atrocities while working towards healing and reconciliation.
