Slavery and Abolition 1831 - 1841 by Albert Bushnell Hart, published in 1906
Slavery and Abolition, is the 16th volume in the series entitled The American Nation: A History. Published in 1906 by Albert Bushnell Hall, this volume delineates the abolitionist movement through an analysis of primary texts and papers.
In chapter 7, entitled “Control of the Slaves”, the author references the firsthand account of Frederick Law Olmsted. Olmsted describes the brutal beating and the pitiful cries of an African American woman being whipped by her White owner. The record of this event is sickening and sobering.
However, Olmsted’s witness and willingness to record this inhumane event reminds the modern reader of the importance of recognizing the dignity of every human being. Olmsted’s account recorded by Hall should continue to propel social change and working towards a society that values every human being.
